Booze and News: Spotify Deletes Neil Young’s Discography After Joe Rogan Ultimatum

Legendary songwriter Neil Young’s music has been removed from streaming giant Spotify following the platform’s exclusive partnership with controversial podcaster Joe Rogan.

The Buffalo Springfield star had previously sent a letter to Spotify’s bosses regarding Mr Rogan’s podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, which has been slated by medical experts and scientists for spreading false information about the Covid-19 vaccine.

Spotify then confirmed that Mr Young’s discography would be taken down from the platform. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter a spokesperson said: “We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users, with that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators.

“We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon.”

On 24th January Mr Young posted a statement on his website requesting that his record label and management team immediately look into the matter.

The Grammy award-winning songwriter wrote: “I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines – potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them. Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule. I want all my music off their platform. They can have (Joe) Rogan or Young. Not both.” as reported by Rolling Stone.

Reviews: Mangoseed – Alternative Facts

Every now and again there will be that one song that shouts higher and louder than the thousands that rush through the promo doors. Something that genuinely hooks, that strives to innovate, that is actively seeking to destroy all trace of complacency and repetition; enter ‘Alternative Facts’ from the wizards at Mangoseed.

In just three and a half minutes the band not only serves up a fantastic first tease to ‘Dreamers’, the record from which it originates, but also makes a great case for the novelty of combining elements of ska, rock, punk and jungle into an eclectic smorgasbord worthy of lauding. This comes packed with reggae style hooks to keep the heads bobbing but also serves up a bitter political undertone when the lines are read between which is well complimented by the generous helping of bass lines and electronic glitching and screeches.

But for some it will be the poignancy that accompanies the sharp political undertones that do the track’s heavy lifting. Frontman Nicholai La Barrie has no issue with blending his hypnotically smooth deliveries with piercing blows against the social zeitgeist; he does not mince words and nor should he do so.

This is a concept that stretches out beyond the three and a half minute boundaries that the song finds itself between and into the greater picture of Dreamers’ 11 tracks. Nicholai explains: “Most of our lives are governed by some kind of political decision that we had nothing to do with. It’s really important to say that out loud and ask questions so we feel with and for people and bring them together. There is healing power in music. You can find bliss in everybody jumping, singing, and dancing together.”

An indelible message from an unequally unforgettable band. ‘Alternative Facts’ deserves to be played loud and proud by all; so grab your speakers and turn the to 11.

B&R Showcase: David Hicks and The Art Of The Single Moment

It’s not every day that you stumble across something as wonderful as the photographs of David Hicks, whose work captures music and motion in striking and unusual ways. Hicks’ shots are often taken from unexpected angles, or at times not often documented by standard pictures. See, for example, his visual documents of Cuban musicians, music and dance. “In Cuba,” says Hicks, “they live for their music. It’s everything to them, and they’re very good at it.” After the initial outlay of buying the instrument of choice,” he goes on, “it’s very cheap to enjoy. There’s not much in the way of other distractions so practise is easy.”

You can view Hicks’ fascinating photographs here. Says Hicks: “I tried to avoid the obvious photographs of the average Cuban bands doing their thing.” In many of his shots, Hicks has succeeded in capturing wonderfully suspended moments in time, just before the music starts, or just after it has finished. Please do check out the work of this singular photographer.

Michael Jones’ latest release ‘The Crossroads’ crosses new territory for the songwriter

Award-winning poet and singer-songwriter Michael Jones released his new single ‘The Crossroads‘ on Friday the 13th of November. One of the only positive things that came out of Friday the 13th, ‘The Crossroads’ is an anthem all about change at a time where the world is hurting.

Taken off his forthcoming EP ‘American Poet Part II‘, which is out November 27th, Michael states that ‘The Crossroads’ is linked to his successful track ‘This is The Night’. On the track, Michael states, “These epic and changing times have brought humanity to The Crossroads. The symbolism of Robert Johnson, trading his soul for the gift of music, is woven into the heart of American folklore. We can all sense that 2020 is a transitional historical moment. The choices we make now may very well determine the fate of our collective human soul. It is from this idea that I wrote The Crossroads”.

Drawing inspirations from the likes of poets-turned musicians such as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Jim Morrison, Michael Jones is an innovative artist with a strong discography behind him.

‘The Crossroads’ is bathed in blues sensibilities, and nods to the classic legend of Robert Johnson at the crossroads. A genuine track that feels timeless, Michael Jones states that ‘The Crossroads’ reflects classic songwriters while giving a new, refreshing sound.

Jon Scott to release brand-new EP ‘Freedom – A New Jerusalem’

Singer and multi-instrumentalist Jon Scott has his eyes set on brand-new EP ‘Freedom – A New Jerusalem’. The project will be an important release that looks to unite the world we live in during the face of racial prejudice and social injustice.

Coming in a time of need, Jon Scott’s new EP is a healer that invites listeners into a sort of safe haven during the world’s current climate.

In his observations of the world and its battle against not only the pandemic but also social injustice, the EP highlights the Black Lives Matter movement.

Originally inspired in response to Donald Trump’s plans to build a US/Mexican wall, ‘Freedom – A New Jerusalem’ has taken a new meaning during these uncertain times.

On the new release, Jon mentions: “The inherent prophecy of the ‘wall theme’ then manifested itself in the on-street killing of George Floyd. Then amazingly, we saw the outpouring of humanity, love and oneness in the BLM demonstrations all over the world. For me, this is a vision of ‘a new Jerusalem’, a place where all God’s children can stand together as one humanity…

Out of all the craziness, hatred, spite and nastiness, the majority of folk all around the world marched together to stand up for what is blatantly right. It’s a seminal moment, era-defining and world awakening, particularly given the fact that this all occurred in lock down. In particular, I hope that the video will be a picture chronicle for the world of this amazing uplifting of spirit particularly for the future generations, as a benchmark of what we should be about as all god’s children  or if one prefers, children of one creation and of the universe”.

Paul Tully releases passionate tribute to tackling ‘Anxiety’ head-on

Hailing from Strabane in County Tyrone, Paul Tully currently resides in Dublin. Known around the circuit as one of Ireland’s best kept secrets, there’s nothing hush about Paul’s heartfelt single ‘Anxiety’.

An ode to a condition that affects millions across the world, the poignant track couldn’t have come at a better time.

During the darkest times of UK lockdown, anxiety levels are at the highest they’ve been in a long time. Hoping that it’ll give people confidence to speak up about their mental health, the single states that you are never alone, and reaching out for help may be hard but it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do.

“I’m hoping the song could bring a sense of comfort to those suffering from anxiety and let them know they aren’t alone. When I wrote the song in June of this year, we were in the middle of lockdown and there was a real uncertainty regarding our health and well-being of not only ourselves but those closest to us. On top of that we have ever-increasing living costs, the never-ending Brexit and a complete lack of job security – people really are at their wits end. The song basically describes my experience with anxiety and I hope it can help anyone listening and know that they aren’t alone.”

Paul Tully

‘Anxiety’ resides in a warm Americana arrangement that subtly nudges country-pop. An upbeat track that’s filled with optimism, the guitar-driven track may feature a tear-jerking message, but it’s lively sound is bathed with hope.

Airline delay? Airline hooray! The wait leads to Laura Mitchell’s new track ‘Killing Time!’

Would you ever imagine composing a beautiful song while stuck on a long-haul flight from Western Australia to London?

Well, not many possess the ability that composer John Young has. Whilst being stuck on this flight, Young had the melody stuck in his head and had the song fully written by the time he finally arrived in London, hence the ironic song title.

From that point onwards, he made it his mission to find the right singer and pianist for the track, which came in the form of David Bennett and Laura Mitchell.

As a wedding singer, Laura immediately connected with the song, providing the emotional, strong and powerful vocals.

I didn’t see this coming or work towards it. I am in a wedding band. At weddings, many people ask, ‘Do you perform you own stuff?’ or ‘You should go on X Factor’. I didn’t have plans for that. I used to write music in my teens but worked off most of that angst and sadly stopped writing music when I started learning about it at Uni. I suffered from stage fright for a long time, but through the wedding band, the ability to put on the dress and heels and become a rock star – singing other people’s songs, I become someone else. It’s nice for me to become vulnerable again with a chance to show off the softer side of my vocals”.

Laura Mitchell.

Crack of Dawn Release Cracking New Tune ‘Tiempo’.

With over forty years of funk continuing to flow through their systems and into the masses, soul legends Crack of Dawn have returned with an exciting new single ‘Tiempo’.

Collaborating with four time Grammy nominee and award winning actress Melba Moore, writers Dennis Nieves and Michael Dunston wrote the song about people needing to find themselves after a serious break up.

Although written many years ago, the song relates even to this day, with Michael’s wife battling some medical issues as of late.

The deep vocals by Dunston, smooth instrumentals and the strong female voice from Melba Moore allows this track not only to be therapeutic and relatable, but to be taken to a whole new level of soul and funk.

You can listen to ‘Tiempo’ here:

This power collab should excite fans extremely, with both band and artist having worthy accolades under their belt. Melba Moore has a total of eleven top ten U.S hits on the Billboard charts over the past 40 years, as well as two number one R & B hits (“Falling” and ”A little bit more”, with Freddie Jackson).

Millie Manders & The Shutup Announce Adrenaline Fuelled Debut Album

Following the towering success of their significant single releases of ‘Silent Screams’ and ‘Your Story’, MM&TS have announced the release of their debut album ‘Telling Truth, Breaking Ties’.

The album – which is set to be let loose on October 23rd – is plain telling of the bands’ previous works; with the teaser track, ‘Bitter’ which will be released on August 7th.

Raunchy riffs and vivacious vocals flow throughout this timeless punk-rock twist – revealing their core influences, including the likes of Green Day and The Specials. The new single also tackles crucial topics in that appear in todays’ society more than ever – such as the feelings of trauma and abandonment which stem from sexual abuse and domestic violence.

Millie Manders and The Shutup as one of the UK’s most vital acts, and an adrenaline boost to even the most stoney-hearted music fan.

– New Noise

Another key track from the album is ‘Silent Screams’. A song which draws in a foot-tapping ska-stemmed beat, accompanied with another fine example of Millie’s roaring vocals and the bare-boned band to suit.

Manders’ music never feels overwrought with commentary, yet manages to convey its messages effortlessly.

– Louder Than War

This assertive album is near-perfect. Manders’ natural prowess to detailing raw topics in such a manner that leaves you no choice than to listen on further and further is simply sublime.
